PHILIP ARMSTRONG

Philip brings a broad and varied marketing background that includes financial services (BofA, GMAC/Ditech, 1st Nationwide Bank), technology & ecommerce companies (Philips Electronics, Disney, eHarmony) and several advertising agencies.

Prior to coming to Charlotte in 2007, Phil has spent his Marketing career on the West Coast having lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Eugene, Oregon.

Phil first learned to play chess from his Father at the age of 6 where he was introduced to the Fool’s Mate and eventually how to avoid it!

After retiring from corporate life in Fall 2022, Phil rediscovered chess becoming a member of the Charlotte Chess Center in January of 2023. Looking for an opportunity to work with Charlotte area schools, Phil accepted a part-time position in support of the Charlotte Chess Center (CCC) -- currently offering chess instruction in over 60 public, charter and private elementary schools. Those duties expanded to support the CCC’s expanding marketing and communications efforts.

Phil is married and lives in Charlotte, NC and has one son. (Mindy and Casey).

Phil holds a Masters degree in Journalism from the University of Oregon (Ducks) and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara (Gauchos).

Military Service: US Coast Guard Reserves – 10 Years.
