We have several great options designed specifically for complete beginners to learn the fundamentals of the game:
Academy Classes: We offer step-by-step, beginner-friendly instruction through our in-person academies (conveniently located in North Charlotte and South Charlotte) as well as online. View Kids Chess Classes
Junior Master Chess Camps: Our half-day camps are a fun, immersive way for absolute beginners (ages 5–12) to learn the game during summer and holiday school breaks. View Summer & Holiday Camps
School Programs: We operate after-school chess programs at over 60 schools across the Greater Charlotte area! Check our directory to see if we currently run an enrichment club at your child's school. View School Chess Programs
Once they know the basic rules, the next step is building a strong foundation and getting comfortable playing over the board. We highly recommend:
Academy Classes: It is important that students receive fundamental training to learn chess the right way. Our intermediate classes build perfectly on what they have learned at school, led by our award-winning instructors. View Classes
First Moves Scrimmages: These unrated youth events are a great entry point into formal play. They provide a fun, low-stress environment for players to experience real games and tournament rules without the pressure of a US Chess rating. View Scholastic Events Schedule
For students ready to earn an official US Chess rating, we have countless events! We recommend beginning with our weekly club events and youth-only rated events held at both our North and South Charlotte facilities:
Under 1000 Sundays (Main/South): One rated game per week, designed specifically for developing players. Free for CCC members!
Under 800 Wednesdays (North): A weekly rated game perfect for building early tournament confidence. Free for CCC members!
Youth Action Quads & Rated Scholastics: These events group players into small sections by rating, ensuring incredibly close, evenly matched games with trophies awarded at monthly events. View Rated Events Schedule
Please note: All "rated" tournaments require an active US Chess membership. We also highly recommend becoming a CCC member for tournament discounts! Become a CCC Member
You are welcome to visit the CCC anytime during our normal business hours to see the space and check out the club! You can find the hours and directions for your nearest location here: View Locations & Hours

We welcome students as early as 5 years old in our beginner youth programs! Our curriculum is structured to ensure that younger children learn in a supportive, engaging environment tailored to their developmental needs, while older students are grouped with peers of similar ages and skill levels.
No, you don't need to bring a thing! The Charlotte Chess Center provides all necessary equipment for all of our classes, camps, and tournaments—including high-quality chess sets, pieces, scoresheets, and digital chess clocks.
Not at all! We welcome students of all levels and ambitions. However, we truly believe that chess is the most rewarding when kids can see themselves improving! While our environment is highly social and supportive, our classes provide structured learning and expert guidance so your child can celebrate their progress, build real confidence over the board, and experience the fun of developing a brand-new skill.
