OVERVIEW

Led by Charlotte Chess Center high school interns, the Charlotte High School Chess League (CHSCL) is a recreational league for players in grades 9-12. The league is open to all high school teams in the Charlotte Metro Area. There is no cost to join!


The league meets once a semester during the school year.


ELIGIBILITY

  • Players must attend school in the Charlotte Metro Area

  • Players must be in grades 9-12

  • Public, charter, and private schools welcomed

  • Schools in the following counties eligible: Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, Lancaster, York, Gaston, Lincoln, Iredell, Catawba

  • Entries limited to first 15 teams (60 players)

    • Max 4 teams per school



HOW IT WORKS

  • This is an unrated event, no memberships required

  • 4 v 4 team format (Board 1 v Board 1, Board 2 v Board 2, etc)

  • Schools may register multiple 4 player teams (High School A, High School B, etc.)

  • Non-elimination - all teams play 4 rounds, see schedule below

  • Team captains must register a complete team of 4 using the registration form

Round 1: 10:00am

Lunch Break: 12:00pm

Round 2: 12:30pm 

Round 3: 2:30pm

Round 4: 4:30pm

Awards: ~6:30pm



TIME CONTROL

G/45; inc/5

Each player receives 45 minutes plus a 5 second increment to complete each game.

RULES

  • Limited to the first 15 team entries (60 players).

  • Max 4 teams per school

  • Captains to submit board order when registering for the event

    • Using US Chess rule 31B, please order by rating.

  • US Chess ratings used for team averages

  • If players have a US Chess rating, it must be disclosed at the time of registration

  • Unrated players will be assigned a rating of 500

  • This is an unrated event, US Chess membership NOT REQUIRED


OTHER NOTES

  • Weighted wooden sets, digital clocks provided for all sections.

  • Players and teams that do not show up will be penalized and not permitted to play in the league. Please notify us at least 2 days ahead of the event if you/your team cannot play.
