Class Overview
Application Deadline: June 30, 2026
The Ascend Mentorship is an elite, highly exclusive training cohort led directly by CCC Founder and FIDE Master Peter Giannatos. Designed specifically for dedicated juniors rated between 1800 and 2150, Ascend provides the individualized attention, rigorous feedback, and psychological preparation necessary to break the National Master barrier (2200).
With a peak USCF rating of 2390 and a proven track record of coaching several players to the 2200 level, FM Giannatos created the Ascend program to personally guide a select group of 4 to 5 top local talents, equipping them with the specific mindset, skillset, and roadmap required to earn the National Master title.
Goals:
Achieve the National Master Title: Guide the selected students across the 2200 US Chess rating barrier, a distinction held by less than 1% of competitive chess players.
Develop the Master Skillset: Bridge the gap between Class A/Expert and Master by refining opening repertoires, understanding middle game decision making, and developing deep positional intuition.
Forge the Master Mindset: Focus on building resilience, handling tournament pressure, and adopting a consistent study routine.
Fund the Future: 100% of the tuition generated from this program goes directly into a CCCF scholarship to fund high-performance training and event entries for the next generation of talented Charlotte juniors.
Note from the Coach
My overarching motivation has always been to make Charlotte a premier destination for chess, to build a thriving ecosystem where all of our students, members, and adult players can benefit and grow. With a staff of over 50 coaches, including 3 Grandmasters, there is no shortage of expertise provided.
The CCC provides an incredible foundation. Our Elite and Super Elite Teams offer robust instruction, and this institutional support is absolutely enough on its own to help a hardworking student reach the Master level. Yet, my personal passion has always been working directly with strong, dedicated juniors. I know firsthand what it takes to break that 2200 master barrier, and I have guided several of our students across that threshold in the past. Recently, you might have noticed me stepping back a bit from the Tuesday night lectures. Running the CCC takes up a lot of my day-to-day schedule, so I had to make some deliberate adjustments. Stepping back from TNA is a nostalgic sacrifice, but I know it's in great hands with our other coaches. This change allows me to rearrange my schedule and focus my time exactly where I feel I can be the most helpful.
As players enter the 1800–2150 rating tier, highly individualized mentorship can significantly expedite their growth. Having a dedicated coach in your corner helps streamline your training and navigate the specific psychological and technical hurdles of that final push. This mentorship program is just one way I can remain personally involved in continuing to shape the lives of our students.

Tuition, Value & The Giannatos Fellowship:
Application Deadline: June 30, 2026
Tuition: $250 / Month
Cost-Effective Value: Standard private FM coaching typically runs $75–$100 per hour. By combining continuous asynchronous analysis of tournament games, a monthly 1-on-1 session, and ongoing tournament support, this program delivers an unparalleled volume of instruction at a fraction of the traditional cost.
The Giannatos Fellowship Initiative: 100% of the tuition for the Ascend program is donated directly to the Charlotte Chess Center Foundation (CCCF), a 501c3 non-profit.
These funds specifically fuel The Giannatos Fellowship, a grant designed to support Charlotte-area top juniors. By investing in their own path to National Master, Ascend students are directly funding the growth and opportunities of the broader chess ecosystem.
Fellowship Utilization & Eligibility: The Fellowship covers prestige event entry fees (such as IM/GM Norm Invitationals), travel stipends for major out-of-state or national events, and specialized 1-on-1 Grandmaster coaching grants. Students enrolled in the Ascend Mentorship are fully eligible to apply for these same funds when they qualify for such events.
