Events & Tournaments

An organized event which brings players of all levels together for formal competition.

At the CCC we offer two types of tournament formats:

1. Quads: Groups of 4 based on ratings (ensures close matchups)

2. Swiss Format: Players with similar scores are paired together

Both formats are non-elimination

Note: Tournaments are not only for experienced players, they are merely designed to bring players together in an organized way.

Unrated Tournaments - organized events designed to encourage participation and teach players the basics of tournament play. These events do not necessarily follow strict, formal rules but rather tend to be more relaxed. In addition, membership to US Chess, the governing body for chess in the United States, is not required for unrated events.

Rated Tournaments - the most common, and a bit more formal. Players in rated tournaments are expected to follow the rules of formal tournament play. The results of the games from rated play are submitted to US Chess for "rating". US Chess keeps track of the results submitted to them and assigns each player a "rating" which reflects their general playing ability.

It all depends on the tournament itself. Some events may be restricted to certain groups such as: children/scholastic, seniors, girls, players from particular regions, etc. Having said that, if the tournament is listed as "open", that generally means that any player may play the event. The vast majority of events at the CCC are either scholastic or open events.

Yes. The vast majority of tournaments separate players into sections. In most scholastic (children only) tournaments students are separated by age, grade, or rating. In open tournaments, players are typically separated into sections based on their rating.

A rating is a number designed to represent a player's chess ability. Ratings range from 100 - 3000. A general breakdown of US Chess ratings are as follows:

• Ratings 100-999: Beginner Tournament Player

• Ratings 1000-1499: Intermediate Tournament Player

• Ratings 1500-1999: Strong Tournament Player

• Ratings 2000-2199: Expert Level Player (top 3% of rated players)

• Ratings 2200+: Master Level Player (top 1% of rated players)

It's easier than you might think! To get an official chess rating, you simply need to play in any of our "Rated" events (such as our local club Opens or Youth Scholastic events). Once you or your child complete that first rated tournament, we submit the results to the US Chess Federation, and the initial rating will be published on their site by the very next day.

An “Open” tournament is one in which both youth and adults can play and are paired based on ability, not age. Our club-level open tournaments are Tuesday Night Action, Wednesday Action Quads, Reverse Angle, Rapid and Blitz, FIDE Saturdays, and Sunday Afternoon Classical. Most of our major tournaments are also Open.

We recommend our unrated First Moves Scrimmages! For kids ready for rated play, we recommend our U1000 Sundays in the South location and U800 Wednesdays in the North location as well as our Youth Action Quads events.

Absolutely. If you are just looking to play for fun, our free Monday and Sunday Adult Casual nights or our Monthly Brewery Meetups are the perfect place to start. If you want to try a tournament, adults of any age and skill level are welcome to play in our "Open" events!

A quad is a four-player tournament section where players are grouped closely by their US Chess rating. You will play exactly three games—one against each of the other three players in your quad. It ensures competitive, evenly-matched games.

It depends on the event! For our social events (like Adult Casual or Brewery Meetups) and unrated scrimmages, no memberships are required. However, to play in rated tournaments, you must have an active US Chess Federation membership. While a Charlotte Chess Center (CCC) membership is not strictly required for most weekend tournaments, CCC members do receive discounted entry fees and free entry to our weekly perpetuals!

It depends entirely on the event! Our weekly rated games (like Tuesday Night Action or Sunday Afternoon Classical) take just a couple of hours. A Wednesday Action Quad usually takes about 3 to 4 hours. Multi-round weekend events, like our Monthly Opens or Major Festivals, are full-day or multi-day commitments. Always check the specific event schedule on the registration page!

FIDE is the international governing body of chess. When an event is FIDE-rated, your games are submitted internationally as well as nationally (US Chess). You do not need an existing FIDE rating to play; playing in these sections at the Charlotte Chess Center is exactly how you earn your international rating!

No problem! If you need to skip a round during a multi-round Swiss tournament, you can request a "half-point bye." This allows you to take a round off without being completely penalized in the tournament standings. Bye requests must typically be submitted before the tournament starts. (Note: Byes are not permitted in Quads).

In longer "Classical" or standard time control tournaments, yes! Players are required to record their moves using standard algebraic chess notation. However, in fast-paced "Blitz" and "Rapid" events, or in our true beginner "First Moves Scrimmages," notation is not required. If you or your child are new to keeping score, don't worry—our staff is always happy to explain how it works!

Just bring yourself! The Charlotte Chess Center provides all boards and pieces, though you are welcome to bring your own chess clock if you have one. During tournament games, the playing hall is strictly quiet, and parents/spectators are asked to wait outside the immediate playing area to ensure a distraction-free environment.

We are proud to be the most active chess center in the United States! We organize more than 375 rated events annually—averaging more than one event every single day. We also run more FIDE-rated events than any other organizer in the country.

Yes! Our tournament halls routinely host the strongest players in the world. Current global top-100 players who have competed at CCC events include Fabiano Caruana, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Hans Niemann, Awonder Liang, Sam Shankland and many more.

Since 2017, the CCC revived the Norm Round Robin format in the United States, allowing top American talent to earn their international titles without having to travel to Europe. We've hosted 102 Norm sections, awarding 114 total norms (including GM, IM, WGM, and WIM titles), and helped 13 players earn their final Grandmaster norms right here in Charlotte.
