Course Details

Who is this Level Best Suited For?

Students who are either complete beginners or who have only learned and played chess at home. This course is best for students with no tournament experience or formal chess instruction.

Course Topics

Topics taught in the Fundamentals level include, but are not limited to: piece movement, check, checkmate, stalemate, fundamental checkmates, checkmate patterns, piece values, and chess vocabulary.

Course Goals

Students will be able to play a complete legal game of chess with confidence. Students will clearly understand how a game ends and how to execute basic checkmates. Our coaches will ensure that the students in class learn the necessary and proper fundamentals before being encouraged to begin tournament play.

Upon completion of the Fundamentals course, students will be encouraged to play in our Unrated Practice Tournaments and move on to the Intermediate course.

Materials

All materials are provided for class.

Progression

Considerations for progression include but are not limited to: mastery of topics introduced, completion of homework, class participation and performance.

The CCC's custom leaderboard feature allows instructors to see the amount of effort students are putting in away from class. Instructors will also use the leaderboard tool as a way to monitor student progress.

Once the instructor believes the student is ready to progress, they will notify the parents and classes administrator.

Progress Reports

Parents receive a monthly progress report with key areas of growth and improvement.

Recommendations

For students who are complete beginners (do not know how the pieces move), the in-person classes are recommended. For others, both the online and in-person options are viable.
