On January 27, 2024, the Charlotte Chess Center hosted our Rated Scholastic event at the North location. The tournament featured four rounds of USCF-rated chess and was open to all players rated under 1000 in grades K-8. Over 15 total trophies and medals were awarded to the prizewinners.
In the U1000 section, Michael Smith took clear first place with a score of 3.5/4! He entered the last round as the only player on 3/3, with opponent Carter Hahn the only 2.5/3, meaning a "grandmaster draw" was all it took to secure first place.
In the U500 section, Deniz Galitsky went a perfect 4/4. For this, Deniz gained a whopping 148 rating points, despite only playing three games due to receiving a full-point bye in the first round!
Our Rated Scholastic events are also qualifiers for the NEW Tournament of Champions event scheduled for May 4. Congratulations to the following players who each scored 2.5/4 or higher and have now earned a spot in the Tournament of Champions:
U1000: Michael Smith, Carter Hahn, Samuel Newsome, Magathkannan Udayasankar, Micah Cardinal, and Shrinika Musuluri
U500: Deniz Galitsky, Elliot Zuluaga, Oliver McCready, Avyaan Prasad, and Abhiram Avula
