OVERVIEW

The Charlotte Team K-8 Challenge is a great way for K-8 students of all levels to get involved in tournament competition.  This is a low stress event awarding individual and team prizes. There are both rated and unrated sections which allows students of all skill levels to participate.

End the school year strong by showing up and representing your school!

 

There are team awards for those who have more than 2 players from their school, but all students compete for individual prizes even if there is no one else from their school.

REGISTRATION

Players may register ahead of time using the registration link below - no onsite registration

REQUIREMENTS

Must be in Pre K - 8th Grade

TIME CONTROL

G/10, increment 2

Each player receives 10 minutes per game plus a 2 second increment per move.

Grades K-3 Rated (morning schedule)

Grades K-3 Unrated  (morning schedule)

Grades 4-5 Rated (afternoon schedule)

Grades 4-5 Unrated (afternoon schedule)

Grades 6-8 Unrated (afternoon schedule)

Morning Schedule (Grades K-3)

Arrival: 9:45am

Round 1: 10:00am

Round 2: 10:45am

Round 3: 11:30am

Round 4: 12:15pm

Awards Approx 1:00pm

Afternoon Schedule (Grades 4-5 and 6-8)

Arrival: 1:30pm

Round 1: 1:45pm

Round 2: 2:30pm

Round 3: 3:15pm

Round 4: 4:00pm

Awards Approx 4:45pm

PRIZES

Unrated Sections

  • Individual Awards:

    • Perfect score trophies for 4/4 scores

    • “Top Scorer” trophies for 3/4 or 3.5/4 scores

    • Medals to all players

    • All unrated players who earn a trophy (3 points or more) will receive a FREE US Chess membership* and are encouraged to play in rated events.  Students who are currently US Chess members are not eligible for the voucher.

  • Team Awards:

    • Trophies to Top 5 Schools in grades K-3, and grades 4-5

    • Trophies to Top 3 Schools in grades 6-8

Rated Sections

  • Individual Awards:

    • Perfect score trophies for 4/4 scores

    • “Top Scorer” trophies for 3/4 or 3.5/4 scores

    • Medals to all players

  • Team Awards: Trophies to Top 5 Schools

ENTRY FEE

CCC members and students in CCC school programs: $35.00

Non-members: $45.00

NOTES

  • Tournament FAQ Document

  • Each schedule (morning and afternoon) limited to 200 players.

  • Registration closes at 9:00am or when the capacity limit is reached.

  • Any players in grades PK-8 may participate.

  • Unrated sections – no memberships required.

  • Rated sections – US Chess membership required.

    • US Chess Quick Rated

    • Update live ratings will be used for pairings

  • Top 4 scorers from the same school and in the same section contribute to the team score - minimum 2 players same school/section to form a team.

  • Non-Elimination – all students play all 4 rounds of their schedule.

  • Students may play even if no other students from their school play, they are just not eligible for team awards.

  • All equipment provided.
